Toggle Cleaning Without Holding

Quick Answer

There is no confirmed setting in Moon Sweepers that lets you toggle hand-tool cleaning on and off instead of holding the mouse button.

There is no confirmed setting in Moon Sweepers that lets you toggle hand-tool cleaning on and off instead of holding the mouse button. Nothing in the 1.0.3 patch notes, the developers' October 24 message or the Steam store listing mentions a toggle-to-clean or hold-to-toggle option, and at least one streamer playing at launch complained about having to hold the button down the whole time while brushing.

What you can do right now:

  • In a vehicle: buy the Cruise Control vehicle upgrade. Its in-game description says it holds your speed so you can steer and sweep without holding the throttle.
  • With hand tools: reduce how long you hold the button by upgrading to wider brushes and buying Auto Packer, which packs a capsule at your feet when the container fills.
  • Without touching anything: place robot cleaners so the game sweeps for you.
  • At system level: use Windows ClickLock, a controller toggle in Steam Input, or your mouse software. These are not game features, so test them first.

The game is still being patched quickly, and quality-of-life improvements are on the developers' list. Check the control options in your own settings after each update, because a toggle could be added later.

The Steam store lists four accessibility features for Moon Sweepers: custom volume controls, stereo sound, playable without quick time events, and playable at your own pace. None of them is a hold-to-toggle input option, so do not expect one to be hidden behind those labels.

Why You Have to Hold the Button With Hand Tools

Every run starts with the Toothbrush, and every hand tool after it works the same way: you hold the input and sweep across the dusty ground while the tool's container fills. One streamer playing solo complained during a long brushing session that the mouse would break before the game ended, which is exactly the problem behind this search.

Holding is most painful early, when your tool is narrow and you need many passes per hex. It becomes much less of an issue once you switch to vehicles or automation, which is why the practical fix is usually to move through the hand-tool stage quickly rather than to fight the input.

Check your own settings first

Because the game updates often, do a quick check before you rely on any workaround:

  1. Open the game's settings from the main menu or the in-game pause menu.
  2. Look through every control and input option, including any key binding list.
  3. Look for any option that changes holding behaviour for the primary action.
  4. Check again after each patch. The developers have said quality-of-life improvements are among their priorities.

If you find a toggle there in a newer version, use it instead of the workarounds below. A built-in option will always behave better than a system trick.

Cruise Control: The Built-In Hands-Free Option

Cruise Control is the closest thing to toggle cleaning that the game currently has. It is a vehicle upgrade, not a hand-tool setting.

Its upgrade description, read aloud by players buying it, says it holds the speed so you can steer and sweep without holding the throttle. Once it is running, your vehicle keeps moving and cleaning while you only steer.

How to get it

  1. Buy a Garage. It costs $200 and stores your vehicles.
  2. Buy a vehicle. The vehicle shop lists the Push Sweeper at $300, the Ride-on Sweeper at $1,000, the Lunar Sweeper at $2,500 and the Mega Vacuum Rover at $6,000.
  3. Open the vehicle's upgrades at the Garage. Players have seen Cruise Control in the same list as Tuned Motors, Big Hopper, Turbo Kit and Suction Control.
  4. Buy Cruise Control, then use it while driving.

Streamers reported different Cruise Control prices on different vehicles, so check the cost shown in your own Garage rather than planning around a fixed number. Since patch 1.0.3, any garage can call back, store and upgrade the vehicles you own.

Getting the most from Cruise Control

  • Drive long, straight strips. Cruise Control shines on open, uncleaned ground where you can hold one direction for a long time.
  • Watch the hopper. A full hopper ends the useful part of the trip, so pair Cruise Control with Big Hopper upgrades if you plan long runs.
  • Use Suction Control on the Mega Vacuum Rover. Higher suction widens the cleaning strip but holds the vehicle to a lower speed, which suits slow, steady cruise passes over dense dust.
  • Stay near the keyboard. The upgrade holds speed; it does not steer. Terrain, craters and slopes can still push you off line.
  • Mind the dark. Vehicles can be fitted with Flood Lights, which helps when night falls during a long drive.

Some players have talked about setting a vehicle on Cruise Control and walking away. Treat that as a gamble: the vehicle keeps going in whatever direction it was pointed, and the Moon is large enough to get badly lost.

Cut Down Hold Time on Hand Tools

If you are still brushing by hand, the goal is to finish each hex in fewer passes so you spend less total time holding the button.

Hand toolPrice in the starting tool shop
ToothbrushFree
Nail Brush$5
Handbrush$10
Household Broom$25
Wide Broom$75
Extra Wide Broom$150

A wider tool clears a wider strip with each pass. One shop comparison showed the cleaning width rising from roughly 65.9 cm to 98.8 cm when moving up to the Extra Wide Broom, which noticeably reduces how many strokes a hex needs.

Two upgrades from the Upgrade Matrix also reduce interruptions:

  • Wide Head increases cleaning width. One early version offered an 8% width increase for $40.
  • Auto Packer packs a capsule at your feet when your container fills during cleaning, so you do not have to stop and press Q to pack manually.

Auto Packer does not remove the need to hold the cleaning input, but it removes one of the most repetitive extra actions in the hand-tool stage. In co-op, upgrades bought since 1.0.3 apply to the whole crew because everyone uses the host's upgrade matrix.

Let Robots Do the Holding

Automation removes held input entirely for the area it covers. The first fixed cleaner is the Robot Vacuum Mk I at $250. Its dock covers 19 world hexes, and it keeps cleaning while you do something else.

The trade-offs:

  • A dock only covers the hexes around it, so it eventually runs out of dirty ground.
  • Collected dust still needs a route back to selling, usually capsules on a conveyor.
  • Larger J.O.O.N.A.S units can work across a bigger area, but as of 1.0.3 the developers still list J.O.O.N.A.S units stopping when players move away as an open issue.

If your main goal is to stop holding a button for hours, a robot near your base plus a vehicle with Cruise Control for distant ground covers most of the game without any outside tools.

System-Level Toggle Workarounds

These options live outside Moon Sweepers. The game does not document how it reads mouse or controller input, so none of them is guaranteed to work. Test each one for a minute in a solo world before relying on it.

Windows ClickLock

Windows has a built-in mouse setting called ClickLock. When it is on, holding the primary mouse button for a moment locks it down, and clicking again releases it.

  1. Open the Windows mouse settings and go to the additional mouse settings.
  2. On the Buttons tab, turn on ClickLock.
  3. Use its settings to set how long you must hold before the click locks.
  4. In Moon Sweepers, hold the button briefly to lock it, sweep, then click once to release.

ClickLock only affects the primary mouse button and applies to all of Windows, not just the game. Turn it off when you are done so it does not interfere with dragging and selecting in other programs.

Steam Input on a controller

The Steam store lists full controller support for Moon Sweepers, with Xbox and PlayStation controllers and the Steam Input API. Steam Input lets you change how individual controller buttons behave, including toggle-style activation for a button. If you play on a controller, you can set the button or trigger used for cleaning to toggle in the game's controller configuration in Steam. This changes the controller only; it does not affect a mouse.

Mouse software and macro tools

Many gaming mouse utilities can turn a spare mouse button into a held or toggled click, and general macro tools can do the same. If you use one:

  • Bind the toggle to a spare button, not to the primary button you use in menus.
  • Make sure you can always release it with one press.
  • Keep it to solo play until you know it behaves well. The sources do not say anything about anti-cheat in Moon Sweepers, and in co-op a stuck input can affect a shared world.

Risks and Limits of Workarounds

A locked button can cause problems the game was never designed for. Watch for these:

  • Opening menus while locked. A held click carried into the build menu, the shop or the Moon Map can trigger an unwanted action. Release the lock before opening any menu.
  • Building by accident. If you carry a tool or capsule while a click is locked, release it before aiming at belts or foundations.
  • Alt-tabbing. Switching windows with a locked button can leave Windows thinking the button is still down. Click once after returning.
  • Long unattended sessions. Stepping away with a locked input or a cruising vehicle can drain your container or send you far from base.

A Simple Setup by Stage

StageLeast-holding approach
Toothbrush and early brushesUpgrade quickly to the Household Broom and beyond; consider ClickLock for long sessions
Late hand toolsWide Head and Auto Packer to cut strokes and packing
First vehicleBuy Cruise Control as soon as the price shown fits your budget
Base buildingRobot Vacuum Mk I near your base for passive cleaning
Long termVehicles with Cruise Control for distant ground, robots for local ground

The fastest route away from constant holding is the in-game one: reach vehicles, buy Cruise Control and let robots handle the ground near home. Keep system toggles for the hand-tool stage, and check the settings after each patch in case a real toggle arrives.
